Despite a population exceeding two million, the Western Region of Ghana currently lacks a dedicated Intensive Care Unit (ICU), posing a significant challenge to the delivery of critical and emergency healthcare services. This gap in the region’s health infrastructure has far-reaching implications for patient outcomes, particularly in cases requiring advanced life support and specialized care.
In response to this pressing need, the Western Regional Minister, Hon Joseph Nelson, in collaboration with the management of Takoradi Hospital, has initiated a strategic partnership to establish a state-of-the-art ICU facility. This initiative aims to improve the region’s capacity to manage critical health conditions, reduce avoidable referrals to distant facilities, and ultimately enhance the quality of care available to residents.

To facilitate the successful implementation of this project, support from stakeholders, development partners, corporate entities, and the general public is being actively sought. A donation platform, including the introduction of a short code for mobile contributions, will soon be launched to enable broad-based participation in funding this vital health infrastructure.
The establishment of the ICU is a key step toward strengthening the Western Region’s healthcare system and ensuring equitable access to essential, life-saving services.
