NKRUMAHFEST CALLS FOR RENEWED COMMITMENT TO AFRICA’S UNITY AND SELF-RELIANCE

The birthplace of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah at Nkroful provided the setting for a renewed reflection on the former President’s vision of a united, self-reliant and prosperous Africa.

Speaking at this year’s Nkrumahfest, the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, said Nkrumah’s legacy remains relevant decades after his death, describing it as an unfinished assignment for succeeding generations.

The celebration, held under the theme “Africa Must Unite or Perish,” called attention to Nkrumah’s longstanding advocacy for African unity, economic self-determination and a shared continental purpose.

The Minister stressed that a united Africa must be built on strong institutions, respect for diversity, investment in human capital and the responsible management of natural resources for the benefit of its people.

For the Western Region, he said, the responsibility is to transform its considerable natural resources and economic opportunities into sustainable development, decent livelihoods and meaningful opportunities for young people.

He urged the current generation to preserve what is valuable, confront existing challenges and advance the work left unfinished by earlier generations.

The commemoration therefore moved beyond remembrance to a call for action—honouring Nkrumah’s legacy by pursuing the ideals of unity, self-reliance and inclusive development that continue to shape Africa’s aspirations.
