Western Regional Minister, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah has set up a 9 – 9-member committee to investigate the Ammonia Nitrate explosion that occurred Saturday Night, 9th September, 2023 at Omni Quarries in the Shama District of the Western Region.
The committee which will be chaired by the Regional Chief Director will have as its member, a staff each of the Minerals Commission, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service, and Environmental Protection Agency. Other members include the District NADMO officer, Shama District works Engineer, and Assembly Member of the area.
Hon. Darko Mensah has charged the committee to in 3 weeks produce a report detailing the causes of the explosion. In addition to that, they are tasked to ascertain whether or not the company, Omni Quarries were up to speed with safety guidelines and licensing. They shall also be interrogating whether the company had authorization to store the chemicals on site while making recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
The explosion in the Shama District, claiming 5 lives and injuring many more is the second of its kind in 2 years in the Western Region.
