Following a capacity-building session by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, chaired by Hon. Queenstar Maame Pokua Sawyer, Member of Parliament for Agona East, the Committee engaged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Assembly Members in the Western Region.
The workshop forms part of a broader initiative by Parliament to decentralize its engagements and strengthen collaboration with local governance structures. It also aligns with the Speaker’s vision of bringing Parliament closer to the grassroots and bridging the gap between lawmakers and citizens.

Commenting on the engagement, Hon. Queenstar Maame Pokua Sawyerr described the performance of MMDCEs in the Western Region as impressive, noting that their adherence to established procedures and development plans is yielding positive outcomes. However, she acknowledged that the interactions revealed a broader knowledge gap than anticipated, emphasizing the need for sustained engagements to address these gaps.
On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the Committee, together with regional officials, visited the Mpohor District, Ahanta West Municipality, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Shama Municipality, and Wassa East District Assembly. During the tour, they inspected proposed sites for the construction of 24-hour economy markets as part of ongoing development initiatives in the region.
