WESTERN REGIONAL MINISTER RAISES CONCERN OVER OVERLOADING AS REPAIRS PLANNED FOR AGONA NKWANTA–TARKWA ROAD

On Friday, February 13, 2026, the Western Regional Minister joined the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Hon. Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, together with other key stakeholders, for an engagement forum on axle load control along the Agona Nkwanta–Tarkwa Road. During the forum, the contractor, Gabriel Couto–Rango Consortium, attributed the rapid deterioration of the road to excessive overloading by heavy-duty trucks—particularly those transporting manganese and bauxite—rather than to any construction defects.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Consortium, Mr. Theodore Adimazoya, outlined a comprehensive plan to address the situation. He indicated that within the next month, the Consortium will collaborate with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and other stakeholders to implement traffic management measures. This will pave the way for six months of urgent repair works on the affected stretch.

Mr. Adimazoya further appealed to motorists to exercise patience and reduce speed to facilitate the rehabilitation works. He also appeals to all motorists and commuters to bear for any inconvenience that may arise during this period.

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph welcomed the planned repairs and rehabilitation works aimed at restoring the integrity of the road. However, he remains deeply concerned that despite the presence of the Agona Nkwanta weighing bridge and its personnel, overloading continues unabated.

Hon. Joseph Nelson insist that officials responsible for axle load enforcement be held accountable for these lapses. While the state continues to remunerate them, the persistent overloading of trucks is unacceptable. Those responsible must be made to account for their actions.
