A new chapter in newborn healthcare has begun in Tarkwa and surrounding communities with the commissioning of a US$1.1 million, 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.
The facility, established with support from AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, is equipped to provide specialised care for critically ill and premature babies who previously received treatment in an overcrowded makeshift facility. The hospital had been caring for an average of 80 critically ill and premature babies each month within the limited space.
Representing the Western Regional Minister, the Regional Chief Director, Ms. Rachel Fosuaa Sarpong, joined stakeholders at the commissioning ceremony on July 30, 2026, held under the theme, “Strengthening Newborn Care Through Sustainable Partnerships.”
The new facility features specialised neonatal wards, a NICU clinic, Kangaroo Mother Care wards, a Mother’s Lodge, milk-expression facilities, an in-house pharmacy, and infection-prevention systems, providing a more conducive environment for the treatment and recovery of newborns.
The investment forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery in its host communities. The company has supported the refurbishment of health facilities, construction of community health centres and staff accommodation, health screening programmes, and other healthcare interventions.
The company also announced plans to support the refurbishment of the Intensive Care Unit at Takoradi Hospital before the end of the year.
The commissioning of the NICU represents a significant investment in newborn healthcare in the Western Region. Beyond the infrastructure, the facility is expected to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to save newborn lives, improve healthcare delivery, and provide greater hope and support to families during some of their most vulnerable moments.
