IMPACT OF PORT OPERATIONS ON JOB CREATION IS VERY HIGH JOSEPH NELSON

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has acknowledged the immeasurable role the operations of ports can play in expanding job creation in the country.  According to the Minister, once properly positioned, port operations should be able to enhance activities of all institutions working along the value chain in port business.

He was speaking to the Director General of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye -Kulono, during a courtesy call on him at the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC). Port operations, he underscored forms an integral part of economic management in the country.  It also plays a vital role in the global economy, and therefore its importance cannot be overstated, the Minister noted.

In terms of trade facilitation, ports enable efficient movement of goods between countries, facilitating international trade and economic growth, and Joseph Nelson is concerned about job creation in this direction as the port operations continue to generate employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly, in industries such as shipping, logistics, and manufacturing.

He also touched on revenue generation, as key ingredients making port operations significant and the driving force as well as a major source of revenue mobilisation for governments, through taxes, duties, and other fees. Ports, as espoused by Minister Nelson provide facilities for efficient handling and storage of cargo, while ensuring that goods are delivered safely and on time, aside serving as hubs for intermodal transportation, connecting sea, land, and air transport modes.

The Director General of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Brigadier General, Paul Seidu Tanye -Kulono, who was delighted meeting the Minister for the first time assured him of his cooperation as he assumes office as the head of the institution. He described GPHA as a tenant in Western Region, and called for concerted effort to improve operational efficiency of the Takoradi Port.

The Director General, who was accompanied by the Director of the Takoradi port, Peter Amoh Bediako, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the warm reception offered him. Efficient port operations help to minimize delays and costs in the supply chain, making businesses more competitive, according to experts. Modern port operations also prioritizes environmental sustainability, with prudent measures required to reduce pollution, waste, and carbon emissions.
