The future of mining in Ghana took a significant step forward in Tarkwa on July 29, 2026, with the commissioning of a US$750,000 Smart Systems Centre at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
Established through the support of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, the solar-powered facility is designed to strengthen research, innovation and practical training in robotics, artificial intelligence, big data and other digital technologies for the mining industry.
The facility brings together five specialised areas covering robotics and autonomous systems, advanced data systems, digital equipment fabrication, environmental monitoring and smart farming, as well as sustainable energy.
Representing the Western Regional Minister, Ms. Rachel Fosuaa Sarpong, Regional Chief Director, welcomed the investment and urged managers of the facility to ensure regular maintenance of the equipment to preserve its value and impact for years to come. She described such investments as important contributions to community development and human resource growth.
The centre is expected to enable more mining data generated in Ghana to be processed locally, supporting better decision-making while reducing dependence on external data-processing facilities. It will also help train a new generation of professionals equipped for the increasingly technology-driven mining industry.
The investment builds on AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s wider commitment to education and youth development. Over the past year, the company invested GH¢17.2 millio in education and youth development, supporting 224 students through its Community Scholarship Programme and providing technical training for 40 young people from its host communities.
For the Western Region, the Smart Systems Centre represents more than a technology facility. It is an investment in local talent, innovation and the future of responsible mining positioning young Ghanaians to develop solutions for the industry from Ghana, for Ghana and beyond.
