WESTERN REGIONAL FIRE SERVICE APPEALS FOR SUPPORT TO REHABILITATE WATER TANKER

Sekondi-Takoradi, February 25, 2025 – The Western Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade Two (ACFOII) David Asa Darko, has appealed to the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, for urgent assistance in rehabilitating the command’s only water tanker. The 3,000-gallon capacity tanker, which plays a critical role in firefighting operations across the region, has broken down due to engine failure. A mechanical assessment revealed that the engine needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of GH₵100,000—an amount that exceeds the command’s financial capacity.

During the Minister’s working visit to the Regional Fire Command, ACFOII Darko outlined additional challenges facing the service, including a land dispute over a site intended for a fire training school. He appealed to the Minister to intervene in resolving the litigation and securing the land for the project.

Another concern raised was the poor condition of the Regional Fire Command office yard, which frequently floods and erodes during rainfall. ACFOII Darko stressed the urgent need for asphalting to prevent further deterioration.

Minister Pledges Support for Fire Service

In response, Hon. Joseph Nelson assured the Fire Service of his commitment to addressing their concerns. Recognizing the critical role firefighters play in protecting lives and property, he commended the officers and men for their dedication despite the challenges they face. “Your service is indispensable to society, and I commend your commitment. My office will explore ways to support your efforts, particularly in getting the tanker back on the road and resolving the land issue,” the Minister stated. He further encouraged the command to review and optimize their emergency response strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in handling fire-related incidents.

The visit underscored the urgent need for investment in firefighting infrastructure in the Western Region to ensure the safety of residents and businesses.
