The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, has made a strong appeal to labour unions in Ghana to work closely with the government and other key stakeholders to foster industrial harmony and improve the country’s working environment. Speaking during a courtesy call by the Acting General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Richard Hanson, the Minister, underscored the critical role of labour unions in ensuring stability and development in the industrial sector. He emphasized the need for collaboration between workers, employers, and the government to promote peaceful labour relations. “What the TUC stands for, I believe, is noble. Your activities and mandate contribute significantly to industrial harmony. While fighting for workers’ rights, you also help in streamlining employer-employee relationships to create a stable working environment,” Hon. Nelson remarked.
The meeting, which took place at the Western Regional Coordinating Council, provided an opportunity for the TUC leadership to brief the Minister on the union’s activities and concerns affecting workers in the region.
Commitment to Labour Rights
The Minister acknowledged the importance of safeguarding workers’ rights, stressing that both public and private sector employers must uphold fair labour practices. “Employers have a responsibility to do what is right because we all want a peaceful environment where both parties—workers and employers—are satisfied,” he stated. Hon. Nelson assured the TUC leadership of his commitment to working with the union to enhance its operations, pledging to support initiatives that will improve the welfare of workers in the Western Region.
TUC Seeks Minister’s Intervention-For his part, the Acting General Secretary of TUC, Mr. Richard Hanson, expressed gratitude to the Minister for hosting him and highlighted some pressing labour issues in the region. He appealed to the Minister to support the TUC in acquiring a permanent office space in Sekondi-Takoradi, which would enable the union to function more effectively. Additionally, Mr. Hanson urged the Minister to intervene in an ongoing industrial dispute involving Twyford Ghana, where an employee was allegedly abused. He called for swift action to ensure justice is served for all parties involved.

The TUC leader also requested the reinstatement of the union as a member of the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC), a role it previously held but lost along the way. He emphasized that the union’s participation in REGSEC would enhance efforts to resolve labour-related security concerns.
Hon. Nelson assured Mr. Hanson that he would consider the requests and engage relevant authorities to address the union’s concerns.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to strengthening labour relations and ensuring a conducive working environment for employees and employers in the Western Region.
