Takoradi – The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, has charged the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to remain resolute in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. During a familiarization visit to the battalion in Takoradi, the Minister emphasized the need for discipline and integrity among officers tasked with combating illegal mining operations in the region. He urged the unit to ensure that personnel deployed for such missions remain professional, avoiding any compromise due to financial inducements. “I urge you to select officers who will uphold discipline and resist the temptation of money. The fight against illegal mining requires commitment, and I expect nothing less from you,” Hon. Nelson stated.
The Minister’s call comes amid growing concerns over the environmental degradation caused by galamsey, which continues to threaten water bodies and farmland across the region.

Military Briefs Minister on Operations and Challenges
The visit formed part of Hon. Nelson’s ongoing tour of security agencies in the region to understand their operations, challenges, and areas of collaboration. Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Lt. Col. E.N.N. Osae, briefed the Minister on the unit’s responsibilities, highlighting its role in internal security operations across the Western and Western North Regions. He also outlined key challenges affecting their operations, including poor road infrastructure within the barracks, encroachment on military lands, inadequate emergency response vehicles, and insufficient water supply. Despite these constraints, Lt. Col. Osae reaffirmed the unit’s readiness to support the government’s fight against illegal mining and other security threats.

Minister’s Commitment to Addressing Military Needs
In response, Hon. Nelson expressed appreciation for the military’s dedication and pledged his support in addressing some of the challenges outlined. He assured the battalion that his office would work closely with the necessary authorities to improve conditions at the barracks and enhance the operational efficiency of the unit.
