Roads Sector Departments (Ghana Highway Authority, Departments of Urban Road and Feeder Roads)

The total length of road network in the Region is 8,361.9 km made up of 1,639.9 km of highways, 1,242 km Urban Roads, and 5,481 Feeder Roads. Of the total length of Highways/Trunk Roads, 52% were classified as good, 35% fair and 13% poor. The overall condition mix of Urban Roads in the Region was 26% good, 17% fair and 57% poor.

Principal routine maintenance activities carried out by the Department of Urban Roads during the period under review was pothole patching of paved roads and maintenance of traffic signals in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. Works on Emergency upgrading of selected arterial and critical collector roads in 5 towns within the gas enclave (28.8km) awarded in October 2016, with 35% progress in 2019 (Cumulative progress at the end of 2019 was 75%). Total length of ongoing road projects     –           152.27km

Regarding the Region’s Feeder Roads, the identified length of 5,481km is categorised as follows:

            Engineered Network               =          3,129km          (57%)

            Partially Engineered                =          1,161km          (21%)

            Non-engineered                      =          1,191km          (22%)

 

Conditions of Feeder Roads in the Region:

            Good                                       =          1,799km          (33%)

            Fair                                          =          2,266km          (41%)

            Poor                                         =          1,416km          (26%)

 

Surface Type of the Road is categorized as follows:

            Bitumen                                  =          392km             (7%)

            Gravel Surface                        =          4,078km          (74%)

            Earth   Surface                        =          1,011km         (19%)

 

There was widespread demand for road improvement in the Region which posed security threat as community members resorted to demonstration and road blocks. Critical roads included the Tarkwa-Takoradi Highway plied by heavy duty vehicles conveying bauxite and manganese to Takoradi Port which saw sectional works and awarded for repairs. Other major roads constructed included the following:

  • Kejebril – Mpohor road sod-cutting took place on 10th June, 2018
  • The Essiama – Nkroful Edubrim
  • Telekubokadzo – Simpa Junction Road

Also in Sekondi-Takoradi Metorpolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality, 12 out of 14 traffic lights were repair/replaced. Installation of 5 No. traffic lights at Kasaworodo begun in 2019.

Energy

Under Energy, the Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan (Karpowership) was relocated from Tema to the Sekondi Naval Base. This was to add up to Abaodze Thermal Plants production, by tapping Liquidified Petroleum Gas from Ghana Gas, Atuabo. The year also saw a number of communities connected to the national grid. At least, all the District Capitals had street lights and bulbs installed.

Utilities

The Region is served with the all the major telecommunications in Ghana namely as MTN, Vodafone, Airtel-Tigo and Glo ; 46.4% of the Region’s population have access to mobile phones.  However, some rural communities have problem with connectivity due to non-availability of telecommunication masts.  Rural water coverage is 44% while 11% of the population has access to pipe borne water. Electricity supply is at 65%.

Railways

The Region is connected by 1,272km of railway lines linking the mining towns of Tarkwa, Nsuta in the Western Region and Awaso in the Western North Region to Takoradi Habour.
